Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I take Ortho in conjunction with other products?

Ortho is a bone, cartilage, and ligament product; as such, it contains only nutrients known to benefit these tissues. You can safely take it in conjunction with a basic one-a-day vitamin so that you'll get a balance of vitamins and minerals. You can also take it in conjunction with our Omega-3 Fish Oil. You should not take it in addition to our Health or Sport products or any other product that contains significant levels of glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate.

2. What Makes This Product Unique?

Nutriex Ortho provides a comprehensive blend of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to help maintain proper bone structure and function. Nutriex Ortho provides nutritionally meaningful levels of all ingredients. Unlike many competitors, Nutriex Ortho contains ASU, zinc, copper boron, flax seed oil and manganese.

3. Who Should Use This Product?

Nutriex Ortho is intended for individuals who want to maintain the proper structure and function of healthy bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

4. What is the role of vitamin D in Nutriex Ortho?

There are a number of clinical trials documenting the benefits of supplemental vitamin D for maintaining normal bone health and calcium metabolism, especially in the elderly. Due to limited exposure to sunlight and use of sunscreens 400 IU daily is recommended.

5. I have high blood pressure and take medication, will glucosamine and chondroitin interact with my medicine or affect my blood pressure?

We are not aware of any known medication interactions with glucosamine and chondroitin. None of the clinical studies have shown this to be a problem, even the long-term studies of up to 5 years.

However, products containing these supplements often contain some sodium, which can raise blood pressure in people who have salt-sensitive hypertension. This is not a medication interaction, but an effect from the sodium itself. Nuitriex Ortho contains 45mg of sodium.

6. I have already had a knee replacement. Will glucosamine, chondroitin or ASU help regrow cartilage in the new joint?

We are not aware of any known medication interactions with glucosamine and chondroitin. None of the clinical studies have shown this to be a problem, even the long-term studies of up to 5 years.

However, products containing these supplements often contain some sodium, which can raise blood pressure in people who have salt-sensitive hypertension. This is not a medication interaction, but an effect from the sodium itself. Nuitriex Ortho contains 45mg of sodium.

7. Can I take glucosamine and chondroitin with anti- inflammatory pills (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen (eg. Tylenol®?)

Yes, the combinations appear to be safe. In fact, using glucosamine with NSAIDs may be helpful. Some evidence suggests that using glucosamine counteracts the normal decrease in proteoglycan (cartilage) synthesis associated with the use of some NSAIDs. Fortunately, most patients are able to stop using their NSAIDs after taking glucosamine and chondroitin for 2-8 weeks.

8. I'm taking Health. Should I add Ortho to get more bone and cartilage benefits?

No. If you want/need more of the nutrients that benefit bone and cartilage, switch to our Sport product, which contains twice the levels of the cartilage nutrients glucosamine, chondroitin, and ASU

9. Is it safe to take the larger dose of Ortho (4 AM and 4 PM) long-term?

Yes, but it is probably unnecessary. You can decrease your dosage from 8 capsules a day until to the recommended 4 capsules after the first month.

10. I know dietary supplements are not well regulated. How do I know the ingredients in your products are any good?

We outsource our manufacturing and have carefully selected a manufacturer whose priority is to meet or exceed all regulatory standards (either existing or proposed). As such, they only allow ingredients to come from a select group of vendors that meet the following criteria:

  • Pass an independent audit
  • Test and verify their products through 3rd party labs
  • Provide clear written documentation (including Certificate of Analysis) with delivery of their ingredients
  • Supply products that are consistent in quality
  • Screen for microbials and possible contaminants prior to delivery at the same level of stringency as the manufacturer

If a vendor ever falls below one of the above standards, they are eliminated from the working list and their ingredients are no longer approved for use.

We have in the past done some random screening of our more expensive ingredients (which are more likely to be adulterated). After consistently appropriate results, we decided to minimize our expenses and only test if needed.

11. Does the green tea extract in the Nutriex supplements contain caffeine?

Though green tea extracts can be high in caffeine, ours contains a small amount -- 4 mg for the average serving size of 7 Health capsules or 9 Sport capsules. This is equivalent to the amount of caffeine in 4 Hershey Kisses or half a cup of hot cocoa. In comparison, a typical cup of tea contains about 50 mg, while coffee contains 100+ mg of caffeine.
